Are You Ready For The Halloween Fun?

Halloween! This spooky fun holiday has its roots in the ancient Celtic New Year celebrations, or Samhain, that normally marked the end of Summer and the beginning of Winter and the dark season. Halloween  coincides with the Christian holiday of All Saints and is very popular with kids in many countries, but especially in the USA.

The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging from door to door for treats dates back to the Middle Ages. The modern trick-or-treating "ritual" resembles the late medieval practice of souling. Poor people would go from door to door on November 1st, the day of the Hallowmas, and  beg for food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day that falls on November 2nd. This tradition originated in Ireland and Britain, but similar practices were found elsewhere in Europe. The practice must have been widespread because even Shakespeare mentions it in his comedy "The Two Gentlemen of Verona", when Speed accuses his master of "puling - whimpering or whining - like a beggar at Hallowmas."

People believed that the souls of the dead would revisit their homes and seek hospitality. Feasts were prepared where the dead had a place reserved at the table.

The custom of wearing costumes and masks at Halloween can be traced to the Celtic tradition of placating evil spirits or disguising oneself from them. In Scotland, for instance, the dead were impersonated by young men dressed in white garments with their faces masked, veiled or blackened.

The masquerade is what makes Halloween such a fun. Everywhere you look on Halloween the kids wear costumes and proceed from house to house asking for sweet treats with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property if no treat is given.
